About

The playbook, not the package.

The Unpackaged Traveler is Gary Wilson's practical field guide to independent travel: 25 years of learning how to travel well for less, across 154 countries.

The people behind it

Travel that stays with you.

I have spent much of my life looking for the kind of trip that is still memorable years later: places with strong local character, dramatic landscapes, history, good food, and a little discovery left in them. That has taken me across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, Oceania, and the Middle East.

I am drawn as much to mountains, deserts, islands, historic cities, and lesser-visited countries as I am to the practical question underneath every good trip: how do you make it work well, without paying somebody else to package every decision for you?

Why this site exists

Adventure is not just for tour groups.

Many active US retirees still want movement, texture, and genuine discovery. What they do not need is a rushed itinerary, a coach window, or the feeling that an organised tour is their only realistic option.

This site turns the research and hard-won lessons into clear, self-guided trip plans. The aim is simple: help you stay longer, travel bolder, spend less, and make decisions with confidence.

The standard

Useful beats glossy.

A beautiful destination is only half the story. The other half is whether the plan holds up in real life: the right amount of time, a workable connection, a sensible hotel, the cost of a missed detail, and enough room to enjoy the place rather than race through it.

Every plan is built to answer those questions plainly. It is not a substitute for checking current entry rules, health guidance, and local conditions before you book, but it should give you a far better starting point than a sales page or a generic listicle.
